The Shooting of Lataurean Brown

In the afternoon of September 2nd, 2003, Lataurean Brown was near the intersection of 7th Street and 13th Avenue in his blue Regal Buick.

Two Rockford Police bike cops Stan North and Tim Eschen seen the Buick and demanded Lataurean exit the vehicle.

Rockford police deputy chief Dominic Iaspparo said the two officers recognized the car from an unexplained incident earlier on in the week.

When Lataurean did not immediately exit, North withdrew his gun and pointed it at Lataurean thru the front windshield. Iaspparo said there was no evidence that Lataurean hit North but somehow North ended up on the hood of the Buick as Lataurean drove in reverse. While on the hood, North shot one time through the windshield.

North flew off the car after Lataurean put the car in drive and turned onto 13th Avenue. He shot five more times as the car drove away.

Lataurean was shot once and later arrested at a house nearby. He was with aggravated battery by use of a deadly weapon, aggravated battery and aggravated fleeing to elude a police officer.

This was the second police shooting in Winnebago county in 2003 and sixth deadly force incident in the 2000’s.
