The Shooting of Trina Files

On June 11th, 2001, around 5 a.m. the two teenage girls of Trina Files called 911 after they witnessed their mother ‘depressed and walking around with a gun.’

When Rockford police officers arrived they evacuated the two daughters and the surrounding neighbors.

At some point, Trina let her German Shepherd outside and RPD officers shot at the dog.

After half an hour of being isolated in a depressed state, Trina opened the door and alleged fired one shot.

Rockford police office Eric Jones returned fire hitting Trina in the arm before she returned inside.

The cops on scene at the time were unaware that Trina was shot and continued to “negotiate” thru a phone call between then Rockford police sergeant Milo Scheffels and Trina.

One of the residents in the neighborhood told Rockford Register Star reporter Anna Voelker that Trina gave up when the SWAT team arrived on scene.

Trina was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

This was the second Rockford police shooting in 2001 and third in the 2000’s.
